On the night of 8 April, Tropical Cyclone Hina swept across Koro Island as a Category 4 storm. Within four hours, the eye passed directly over our community of Nasau Village. By morning, the homes my grandfather built, the church my parents were married in, and the school my children attended were gone.
"We have lost everything we built, but we have not lost each other. With your help, we will build it again — stronger." — Ratu Etueni Naceva, Village Headman
What happened
Of the 412 households on Koro, 340 lost their homes entirely. The freshwater spring at Nakodu, which has supplied our village for generations, was contaminated by saltwater surge. Crops of dalo, cassava and yaqona — our livelihood — were flattened across every plantation.
The Government of Fiji has provided emergency relief and will rebuild key infrastructure, but rebuilding our 40 cyclone-damaged village homes falls to us. That's where Soli Fiji and donors like you come in.
How funds will be used
Every dollar raised goes through Soli Fiji's transparent ledger. Funds will be released in three milestones, each requiring proof of work completed:
Milestone 1 (FJ$48,000) — Materials: Cyclone-rated timber, roofing iron, fasteners, and concrete for 40 home foundations. Sourced from Carpenters Fiji in Nausori.
Milestone 2 (FJ$36,000) — Spring restoration & rebuilding labour: Decontamination of the Nakodu spring by Water Authority of Fiji, plus skilled trades to lead the community build.
Milestone 3 (FJ$36,000) — Replanting: Dalo and cassava seedlings, fruit trees, and tools for 40 families to restart their plantations.
Who we are
This campaign is organised by the Koro Recovery Committee, led by elected village representatives from all five villages on the island. We are working in partnership with the Lomaiviti Provincial Office and have been verified by the iTaukei Affairs Board.
Vinaka vakalevu — thank you very much. Whether you give FJ$5 or FJ$5,000, your support means our island can recover.
